This will be a classroom/Internet course meeting once a week for one hundred and fifty minutes, or a hands-on experience class meeting twice a week for two hundred minutes.
Readings for the class will be assigned from the textbooks as well as in the form of online reading. All readings should be done before coming to class on the assigned date. While it is entirely possible to complete the course with no outside reading, it is not recommended. Generally if you do the readings you will excel in the course, as the lectures serve as a clarification and explanation of material you are already familiar with.. See the Schedule of Topics for the reading assignments.
Quizzes may be given at the instructor's discretion and may be used for verification that assigned reading has been completed. As they are discretionary, weight of quizzes in grading is also left to the instructor's discretion and will be included in the class participation grade.
Exercises for this class will be guided learning experiences; they occasionally may include questions to ensure that the necessary skills have been mastered. The specific weight of exercises in grading is left to the instructor's discretion and will be included in the class participation grade; the HTML and Web design exercises will cumulatively form the second assignment for the class as noted below.
There will be two homework assignments as described below.
Assignment 1 is a proposal for a Web site as described in Topic 17 and meeting specific requirements as established by the instructor. It may be submitted as a text or HTML file or in Word, WordPerfect, Wordpro, OpenOffice.org/StarOffice or AbiWord format; the paper will be submitted via the assignments page or Digital Drop Box on Blackboard.
Assignment 2 is World Wide Web site which will be a cumulative reflection of the HTML and Web Design exercises and meeting specific requirements as established by the instructor. Specific grading criteria for the assignment will be distributed by the instructor. If all exercises are completed this assignment should require little or no additional work. Each student will be given an account on a server to complete this assignment and will submit the assignment by placing the required pages in their Web directory on the server as directed by the instructor.
Midterm and Final Examinations will be multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, short answer, and short essay questions to demonstrate mastery of the material covered; questions will be based on the learning objectives for each topic. The examinations are closed-book/closed-notes. The midterm exam will test material covered in the first half of the course; the final exam will only test material covered in the last half of the course and is not cumulative. We expect to administer examinations using Blackboard; the teaching assistant will proctor administration of both examinations at IIT's Main Campus.
Electronic Mail is an important method of communication in the course. Because of the large number of students enrolled in the course it is not practical to accomodate email addresses other than your IIT student email address; if you do not regularly check your IIT email you should redirect your IIT email to your preferred email address.
Blackboard The course will make intensive use of Blackboard (http://blackboard.iit.edu/ ) for course notes, communications, assignment submissions, providing online resources and administering examinations. All remote students will view the course lectures online via Blackboard, and online office hours will be conducted via Blackboard chat.
Plagarism is unacceptable; All work submitted by students must be their own. Plagiarism may result in an automatic grade of "E". Even though it is incredibly foolish and painfully obvious (since the only real source for plagiarism is previous student work in the course) students have actually submitted plagiarized assignments in the past.
Distance Learning students will use IIT Blackboard at http://blackboard.iit.edu/ as their primary method of communications. Students in the Chicago metropolitan area are highly encouraged to take their examinations live with the class if at all possible, but examinations will also be available at other IIT campuses or by arrangement with IIT Online at other locations. Students enrolled in distance learning sections are always welcome to attend the live course sessions.
