IIT Computer Use Policy
The IIT computer network consists of a campus-wide network, local area networks,
and time-shared computers, as well as personal computers. Computing and Network
Services provides access to the network for IIT students, faculty, and staff
in support of the educational mission of the university. IIT does not monitor
or review material prior to transmission on university-owned networks.
Rights
Members of the IIT community can expect certain rights as they use the
network and its services.
Privacy: All members of the community have the right to privacy in
their electronic mail. However, electronic communications are by no means
secure, and users must recognize that during the course of ordinary management
of computing and network services, network administrators may view user files.
In addition, if a user is suspected of violations of the responsibilities
stated in this policy, or of violating other university policies, or of criminal
activity, that user's right to privacy may be superseded by IIT's desire
to protect members of the IIT community and its commitment to maintain the
network's integrity and the rights of all network users. Should the security
of a system be threatened, user files may be examined under the direction
of the CNS staff or other authorized personnel.
Safety: While unwanted or unsolicited contact cannot be controlled
on the network, network users who receive threatening communications should
bring them to the attention of CNS, the appropriate network administrator,
or the Office of Student Affairs. Users must be aware, however, that there
are many services on the Internet that might be considered offensive to groups
of users, and therefore, network users must take the responsibility for their
own navigation of the network.
Standards
Opinions expressed on the network may not be represented as the views of
IIT. Student users of the network are subject to the IIT Code of Conduct
set forth in the student handbook, as well as the policies on sexual harassment,
unlawful discrimination, academic honesty, and other applicable policies.
IIT faculty and staff users are subject to all IIT policies, including those
prohibiting unlawful discrimination and harassment, and other disciplinary
procedures as set forth in the IIT Procedures Manual. All users are subject
to applicable state and federal laws.
Responsibilities
There are also responsibilities that must be met as part of the privilege
of network access. Network users are expected to live up to these
responsibilities. A user who knowingly violates a network responsibility
may have his/her network access suspended. It is the responsibility of the
user to inquire about the appropriateness of an action or use prior to execution.
-
A network user is responsible for the use of his/her account, and a) may
not give anyone else access to that account, b) may not use an IIT computer
account that was not assigned to him/her, c) may not try in any way to obtain
the password for another user' s computer account, and d) may not attempt
to disguise the identity of the account or machine he/she is using or represent
him/herself to be another user.
-
Network users are responsible for the security of their passwords. This includes
changing one's password on a regular basis and making sure no one else knows
it.
-
Network users must not use IIT's network resources to gain or attempt to
gain unauthorized access to remote computers.
-
Network users must not deliberately perform an act which will disrupt the
normal operation of computers, terminals, peripherals, or networks. This
includes, but is not limited to, tampering with components of a local area
network (LAN) or the high-speed backbone network, otherwise blocking
communication lines (i.e. ping flooding, etc.), or interfering with
the operational readiness of a computer.
-
Network users must not run or install on any of IIT's computer systems, or
give to another, a program which is intended to or likely to result in the
eventual damage of a file or computer system and/or reproduction of itself.
This includes, but is not limited to, the classes of programs known as computer
viruses, bots, Trojan horses, and worms.
-
Network users must not attempt to circumvent data protection schemes or exploit
security loopholes.
-
Network users must abide by the terms of all software licensing agreements
and copyright laws, and may not make copies of or make available on the network
copyrighted material, unless permitted by a license.
-
Network users must not perform acts which are deliberately wasteful of computing
resources or which unfairly monopolize resources to the exclusion of others.
These acts include, but are not limited to, sending mass mailings or chain
letters, creating unnecessary multiple jobs or processes, obtaining unnecessary
output, or printing or creating unnecessary network traffic. Printing excessive
copies of any documents including resumes, theses, and dissertations is also
prohibited.
-
Network users must not attempt to monitor another user's data communications,
nor read, copy, change, or delete another user's files or software without
permission of the user.
-
CNS resources are provided to support the educational mission of IIT. These
resources may not be used for commercial purposes. (Note: See qualification
below in Internet Technology/ Webmaster Student Use Policy)
CNS, and other appropriate IIT authorities should be notified about violations
of computer laws and policies, as well as about potential loopholes in the
security of its computer systems and networks.
When violations are reported, network administrators may suspend network
privileges pending investigation. Account holders will be notified as soon
as reasonably possible. Upon investigation of the alleged violation, the
network administrator may reinstate network privileges or, if the violation
involves an IIT student, may refer the matter to the Office of Student Affairs.
The Office of Student affairs may investigate the alleged violation and determine
the sanction, or may refer the matter to the Campus Judicial Board for
adjudication. If the alleged violation is committed by a member of the staff
or faculty, then the offense will be treated as misconduct under the appropriate
section of the IIT Procedures Manual or Faculty Handbook.
Violators of this policy may be denied access to the IIT computer network,
in addition to other applicable disciplinary procedures.
IIT Web Policy
Excerpted from IIT Draft Web Policy dated April 30, 1997. This policy
is not official university policy but provisions listed below do apply
to Internet Technology/Webmaster Program computer/network accounts.
Appropriate Use
Use of IIT's computer network by students, faculty, and staff is governed
by the IIT Computer Use Policy (See above). Refer to the provisions of the
Computer Use Policy regarding rights, standards and responsibilities for
information about appropriate use. Presentation or transmission of illegal,
pornographic, defamatory, obscene or offensive materials are prohibited and
will subject the violator to disciplinary proceedings as outlined in the
policy on computer use.v
What is an Official Page?
All pages accessible through the IIT servers are considered official, except
for individual (and privately maintained) faculty, staff, and student pages,
as well as student and community organization pages. Private, individual
pages should contain or link to a disclaimer stating that the content does
not express the views of the university.
The disclaimer should read: The content of this World Wide Web page does
not express the views of Illinois Institute of Technology.
Internet Technology/Webmaster Student Use Policy
Acceptance of an account for use in courses in this program constitutes agreement to abide by all policies in this document:
The Illinois Institute of Technology Computer Use Policy, the IIT
Web Policy (as excerpted above), and the Internet Technology/ Webmaster
Student Use Policy. Violation of any of these policies may result in
the loss of account access and computer use privileges.
Computer Lab Use
Students are responsible to follow whatever login and shutdown procedures
are prescribed for their computer lab. For Rice 244, students shall ensure
that their monitor is turned off at the end of class. For live students at Rice Campus
courses in room 155, return all IIT-supplied notebook computers and power supplies to
the cabinet at the end of class; please ensure the nework card end of the computer is
facing out.
Unless a student has an individual account, student files residing on lab
workstations may only be stored in temporary locations and should not be
expected to be there on any subsequent session.
Labs may be available for use outside of scheduled class periods; check with
your instructor or program manager as to availability. To facilitate an
educational environment and to ensure the best use of lab computers, no games
and no disturbances (loud or boisterous talking or any other actions that
may disturb other users) are allowed in the labs. Violators of this policy
will be asked to leave the lab.
Without the express permission of the instructor or lab manager, no user
is allowed to attach any peripheral devices such as a Jazz, Ditto or Zip
drive to any lab computer. However, headphones (but not speakers) may be
connected to any lab computer if a user wishes to listen to computer/CD audio
while using the machine, and use of a USB thumb drive for file transfers
is not permitted but encouraged.
PC Accounts
Students may be granted an individual account on a computer laboratory
workstation or lab server (Windows 2000/XP/2003 or Novell) for their use in the
class. If an individual account is granted, students have the following
responsibilities:
-
Students shall only store personal files in their own directory as directed
by the instructor.
-
Students shall always log out of their own account at the end of each
class session.
-
Students may install demonstration, shareware, or freeware software on their
workstation or server account but shall not install software on a workstation
primary partition (drive C:\) unless it is the only installed partition.
Students may not install software in violation of any licensing agreements.
Students may not install software on any server or workstation where they
do not have a personal account unless specifically authorized or directed
by an instructor.
-
When accounts are on individual workstations, all student class work should
be done on the workstation containing their own account. During regular class
sessions, no one except the instructor may prevent a student from using a
computer on which that student's account resides.
-
Students may operate server software on a workstation where they hold an
individual account but must abide by all applicable university and course
policies.
-
Individual student workstation/lab server accounts shall not be maintained
following the completion of the course
UNIX/Linux Server Accounts
UNIX/Linux server accounts shall be used for class exercises and labs, student
Web pages, and electronic mail. UNIX/Linux server accounts shall normally be available
for six months following the end of the course; at the end of this six month
time period inactive accounts will normally be deleted. Accounts may be
maintained longer for portfolio purposes by arrangement with the system
administrator; accounts selected as
examples of student work
will be maintained indefinitely as long as the course graduate does not change
the pages selected. In addition to the responsibilities set forth in the
Illinois Institute of Technology Computer Use Policy, the following
responsibilities apply:
-
Students shall not maintain software commonly used to gain unauthorized access
to remote computers, circumvent data protection schemes, or exploit security
loopholes in their UNIX/Linux server account.
-
Students shall not maintain IRC 'bot' software in their Unix server account.
-
While Illinois Institute of Technology Computer Use Policy prohibits
use of CNS resources for commercial purposes, this prohibition does not restrict
the subject matter of portfolio Web sites built for purposes of the Internet
Technology/Webmaster program. Student portfolio sites may be real or simulated
commercial sites. Sites created for commercial entities shall be developmental
only; commercial promotion, advertising or widespread distribution of the
URL of a site developed for a commercial entity on an IIT server is prohibited.
Exception to the IIT Computer Use Policy
Violations of policies by Internet Technology/Webmaster program students
shall not be referred to the Office of Student Affairs. Final determination
of disciplinary actions on policy violations by Internet Technology/Webmaster
program students shall be made by the Director, Center for Professional Development.
